Overview
Focus Demolition was engaged by GHD to carry out the full demolition of the redundant Carnarvon Power Station and perform necessary soil remediation at the site. This work was an essential part of Horizon Power’s plan to modernise the area’s power generation capabilities following the construction of the new 18MW Mungullah power station at Brown Range.
The old Carnarvon Power Station had served the community for many years, but with the completion of the new Mungullah power station in August 2011, it was time to retire the outdated facility. The new power station, situated on a 5.4ha site along the North West Coastal Highway, not only provided more efficient power production but also had the capacity to expand to meet the region’s projected growth.
Throughout the project, we were mindful of the cultural significance of the site to the Inggarda people, one of the five groups forming the Gnulli people, who are the traditional owners and custodians of the area. We paid close attention to the heritage surveys conducted by Horizon Power and worked collaboratively to ensure that our demolition and remediation activities proceeded with minimal impact on the land and its cultural heritage.
Process
Power Station Decomissioning
Working closely with GHD, we developed a meticulous decommissioning plan that prioritised safety, environmental protection, and efficiency. Our team navigated the challenges of dismantling large-scale power generation equipment while ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
Infrastructure Demolition
Our skilled team systematically dismantled the power station’s complex infrastructure, including generators, cooling systems, and electrical substations, using specialised equipment and techniques to ensure safe and efficient removal of all components.
Soil Remediation
The soil remediation phase involved extensive testing and the implementation of tailored solutions to address site-specific contamination issues. We worked in close consultation with environmental experts to ensure the site met all regulatory requirements for future use.
